Download your guide to NMFC System Changes
Effective July 19, 2025, the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) will roll out a major revision to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system—a move that could significantly impact LTL shipping operations across the board.
At Revcon Logistics, we’re already evaluating how these changes will affect our customers, and we’re here to guide you through it.
Why the NMFC Is Changing
The current NMFC system has grown overly complex and inconsistent over time. The NMFTA’s goal? To simplify freight classification, reduce disputes, and better align the system with modern shipping practices.
Key Changes You Should Know
Density-Based Classification Becomes the Standard
Shipments will now be classified based primarily on density (weight divided by cubic feet), unless special handling or liability concerns exist.
More Freight Classes
The number of density-based classification tiers will expand from 11 to 13, which may impact your shipping costs depending on your freight’s characteristics.
Streamlined Commodity Listings
Obsolete or duplicate listings will be eliminated to make classification more straightforward and accurate.
Introduction of ClassIT+
This new digital platform replaces ClassIT, offering improved access and usability for NMFC data.
Who Will Be Affected?
Not all LTL shippers will feel the changes the same way:
Shippers of Dense, Heavy Freight (e.g., industrial equipment, canned goods)→ May benefit from lower classifications and reduced shipping costs.
Shippers of Lightweight, Bulky Freight (e.g., furniture, foam)→ Could face higher classes and increased rates.
FAK (Freight of All Kinds) Agreements→ These pricing structures may be adjusted—or eliminated—by carriers.
Everyone→ Expect stricter audits, more reweighs, and a greater emphasis on shipment accuracy.
How to Prepare Before July 19, 2025
1. Assess Your Freight
Review frequently shipped products.
Calculate density and estimate potential classification changes.
2. Improve Shipment Accuracy
Train your team to capture precise weight and dimensions.
Invest in dimensioning tools if needed.
3. Communicate with Carriers
Discuss how the changes may impact your rates or contracts.
Request a cost impact analysis and be ready to renegotiate.
4. Update Your Systems
Make sure your TMS and rating software are up-to-date.
Train your staff on the new classification logic.
