Effective December 6, 2025, the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA)implemented updates to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) rules that directly impact how LTL bills of lading must be completed.
These changes affect how shipments are rated and invoiced and require action for shippers who prepare their own shipping documents.
NMFC Update Effective December 6, 2025: Important Bill of Lading Changes
What’s Changed
Under the updated NMFC rules, commodity descriptions alone are no longer sufficient.
For each commodity listed on a bill of lading, shippers must now include:
NMFC item number
Sub-provision (if applicable)
Freight class
Complete commodity description (article, packaging, markings)
Number and type of handling units or packages
Gross weight and extreme dimensions
Why This Matters
If an NMFC item number is not provided, carriers now have the right to invoice shipments based solely on density.
This may result in unintended increased transportation costs, and because the bill of lading is the legal agreement, those charges cannot be disputed by Revcon or the shipper after the fact.
Additional risks include:
Re-classification and unexpected charges
Billing delays and invoice disputes
Increased audit and compliance exposure
Providing accurate NMFC details at the time of shipment is critical to cost control and compliance.
What Revcon Is Doing
Revcon is proactively aligning shipment documentation and workflows with the updated NMFC requirements and working closely with carriers and clients to ensure consistency and compliance moving forward.
Client Action Needed
If your team prepares bills of lading: Please review your current process to ensure NMFC item numbers, classes, and full commodity details are included on every LTL shipment.
If Revcon prepares shipping documents for you: No action is required — this update is already being managed on your behalf.
